You will need:
1 pair 3.25mm knitting needles
2 x 3.25mm double pointed knitting needles
Small amounts of yarn in double knitting (DK) in green, black and white
Small amount of toy stuffing
Large eyed blunt sewing needle
Notes
Once sewn up the finished hat measures about 6 cm across and 6.5 cm high (excl the dangly legs). The legs are approx 6 cm long.
Abbreviations
Beg - beginning
K - knit
K2tog - knit the next 2 sts together
M1 - make one stitch by lifting the horizontal bar between the 2 knitting needles inserting the tip of the left hand needle into the front of the bar and lifting. Then knit into the back loop of the new stitch.
P - purl
P2tog - purl the next 2 sts together
Rep - repeat
Sts - stitches
St-St - stocking stitch
The Pattern
Body
Cast on 30sts using green yarn
Row1: *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2
Row 2: *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts, P2
Row 3 - 14: beg with a K row, st-st 12 rows
Row 15: K1, *K2tog; rep from * to last st, K1 - 16sts
Row 16: P2tog to end - 8sts
Cut the yarn leaving a long tail of about 20 cm and thread through the remain sts on the knitting needle. Then using mattress stitch or back stitch join the seam.
Head
Cast on 12 sts
Row 1: P
Row 2: *K2, M1; rep from * to last st, K1 - 19 sts
Row 3: P
Row 4: *K3, M1; rep from * to last st, K1 - 25 sts
Row 5: P
Row 6: K
Row 7: P
Row 8: *K2, K2tog; rep from * to last st - 19 sts[
Row 9: P
Row 10: *K1, K2tog; rep from * to the last st - 13 sts
Row 11: P1, *P2tog; rep from * to end - 7 sts
Cut the yarn leaving a long tail of about 20 cm and thread through the remain sts on the knitting needle. Then using mattress stitch or back stitch join the seam. Leave the cast on edge open and stuff the head lightly. Sew to the body
Eyes (make 2)
The eyes are made by knitting a very short i-cord.
Using white and the dpn's cast on 3 sts leaving a tail of about 15cm
Row 1: K3 - then push the sts to the other end of the dpn
Row 2: K3 (remember to pull the yarn tight when knitting the first st)
Rows 3 - 5: rep Row 2
To cast off, K3tog and thread the yarn through the loop. Cut the yarn leaving a 15 cm length. Tie the tie 15cm lengths tightly together and this will make a small ball. Sew a small french knot using black thread into the middle of the eye and sew to the top of the head. Alternatively, stick a googly eye to the white ball.
For the mouth sew a small V shape as shown in the photo. I used 3 strands of yarn to do this.
Dangly Legs
Using green, cast on 7 sts using 3.25mm needles
Rows 1-2: K
Row 3: K2tog, k3, K2tog - 5sts
Row 4: k
Row 5: K2tog, K1, K2tog - 3sts
Row 6: K
Row 7: K3tog - 1st
You now have one st on your needle. You can either slip this st onto a 3.25mm crochet hook and chain until the length measures 5cm. If you'd prefer not to crochet then simply alternate knit and purl stitches until your chain measures 5cm. Tie a loose knot half way down the leg and sew to the bottom of the hat.
Weave in any ends and then send to Fruit Towers!
