Kiwi Hat Crochet Pattern
You will need:
3mm crochet hook
Small amounts of yarn in double knitting (DK) in brown, green, black and cream
Notes
The pattern is written using UK crochet terminology. Please see the abbreviations for US equivalent.
The hat is crocheted using joined rounds. This is because crocheting the striped rows in a spiral causes an uneven look to the colour changes. When crocheting using joined rounds, crochet around the entire piece using the specified number of stitches. When you get to the end of the round join the round using a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round you have just crocheted. To start the next round, chain 1 stitch (Ch1) and then begin the next round. I do not count the first Ch1 as a stitch.
I use the magic ring method and make the required number of double crochet stitches into the ring. If you prefer to chain 2 stitches and then double crochet into the second chain from the hook then that is fine but it will leave a little hole in the middle of the hat. The advantage of the magic ring method is that there isn’t a little hole because you pull the ring tight.
When changing colour work to the point where there are 2 loops left of the last stitch left on the crochet hook. Draw through the 2 loops using the new colour and continue the next round using the new colour. I always crochet over the ends of the colours not in use as it saves weaving in lots of ends later and is a great time saver!
I used left over balls of Rowan Cotton Glace which is a DK weight. Once finished the hat measures about 6.5cm across and 5 cm high.
